History
Oats Avena sativa are native to northern central Asia and found a happy home in the British Isles, throughout Scandinavia, and other northern climes. Oats were a Celtic staple as reflected by the names of traditional oat dishes such as: aran isenach, bannock, broonie, atholl brose, farl, skirilie, sowans, laver, struan micheil, hodgils, and kaaka.
Nutrition Facts
Oats were the first food allowed labeled as a benefit in helping to prevent heart disease by reducing cholesterol by the FDA. In healthy diets oats support the entire system and promote balance. Though oats are broadly considered gluten free, Eden Organic Oat Flakes are not a wheat free or gluten free food as they are roasted and rolled on equipment that also prepares kamut and spelt wheat flakes.
Scientists at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University say, "Whole grain helps regulate blood sugar by slowing down the conversion of complex carbohydrates into sugar. In fact, low-glycemic index food such as whole grain reduces hunger and can help to control weight." Scientists at the Agriculture Research Service completed a study of more than 2,000 people concluding, "at least three or more servings of whole grain everyday could reduce the chances of developing metabolic syndrome - a condition marked by a combination of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, poor blood sugar control, low HDL 'good' cholesterol and high blood fats."
According to the FDA, "Diets rich in whole grain and other plant foods, and low in total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers." Also, "Low fat diets rich in fiber-containing grain products, fruits, and vegetables may reduce the risk of some types of cancer, a disease associated with many factors." Eden Organic Oat Flakes are low fat, low saturated fat, cholesterol free, and sodium free. They are rich in fiber, thiamin (vitamin B1) and manganese, and a good source of protein, iron, and magnesium.
