History
Pumpkin seeds, or pepitas, have been enjoyed worldwide as important food and a health remedy for centuries. Cultivation of pumpkins began in Mexico and South America, from there they found their way to the native peoples of North America. With the arrival of Europeans the pumpkin and its seeds were quickly adopted worldwide. Native Americans used the seed as a preventative and treatment for intestinal parasites and for promoting kidney, bone, digestive, and reproductive health. Their use as a remedy for parasites was so widely documented by the late 1800s to early 1900s, that the United States pharmacopoeia listed the seeds as an official treatment. Physicians in the 1800s regularly recommended pumpkin seeds for urinary, gastric, and digestive problems.
