MORE DETAILS
Muesli is a traditional breakfast cereal in Europe made of rolled oats with dried fruits, nuts, and seeds. Organic EDEN Cinnamon Muesli is different in having three 100% organic whole grain rolled flakes - U.S.A. family farm oats, rye, and spelt wheat. Sweet tangy organic raisins, dried wild blueberries, dried organic cranberries, and a bit of organic cinnamon add delightful flavor. Roasted, lightly salted organic pumpkin and raw sunflower seeds lend richness, crunch, and nutrition.
Whole grain organic oats, rye, and spelt are sprayed with filtered deep well water before being separately gas fired, ceramic kiln roasted. While still hot the whole grain is stainless steel rolled into flakes, bagged, and shipped to Eden's Michigan facility. Here they are mixed with the dried fruit, seeds, and cinnamon. After blending the muesli is packed in a reclosable package chosen for its protective oxygen, moisture, and light barrier qualities that best retain freshness, flavor, and nutrients. EDEN Cinnamon Muesli contains no sulfites, added sugars, or preservatives.
History
Muesli was first made around 1900 by Swiss physician Dr. Maximillian Bircher-Benner and his wife for patients in their hospital. A diet rich in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables was an essential part of their patients' therapy. It was traditionally served as a cold cereal eaten with fresh lemon juice, but there are many more preparation styles today.
Nutrition Facts
Sweet, aromatic, stimulating cinnamon is the bark of the semitropical cinnamon evergreen tree. The bark is cut and rolled into sticks called quills which are dried and ground into powder. It is one of man's longest used spices. Its benefits have been documented since 2,700 B.C. throughout Asia, Europe, and Egypt. Of the four main cinnamon varieties, Chinese cinnamon Cinnamomum cassia, like that used in EDEN Cinnamon Muesli, is believed to be the most beneficial to health. This variety contains three components in the essential oils of its bark: cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol. These compounds seem responsible for cinnamon's anti-microbial, anti-fungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests seasoning high carbohydrate foods with cinnamon helps aid digestion and lessens the glycemic response, and this helps the body use glucose more effectively. Some research suggests that the aroma and flavor of cinnamon is beneficial to memory and cognitive function. Cinnamon's duel efficacy of warming or cooling also improves energy, vitality, and circulation.
Scientists at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University say, "Whole grain helps regulate blood sugar by slowing down the conversion of complex carbohydrates into sugar. In fact, low-glycemic index food such as whole grain reduces hunger and can help to control weight." Scientists at the Agriculture Research Service completed a study of more than 2,000 people concluding, "at least three or more servings of whole grain everyday could reduce the chances of developing metabolic syndrome - a condition marked by a combination of abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, poor blood sugar control, low HDL 'good' cholesterol and high blood fats." EDEN Cinnamon Muesli is organic whole grain cereal free of cholesterol, very low sodium, rich in magnesium and manganese, and a good source of protein, fiber, and thiamin B1. A satisfying bowl of EDEN Cinnamon Muesli in the morning provides lasting energy and sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.
